Pre-Trip Inspection Checklist — FMCSA-Compliant, Every Trip

FMCSA requires a pre-trip inspection before every commercial trip. Here’s the complete checklist used by CDL examiners.

Step through the full FMCSA pre-trip inspection: engine, brakes, steering, lights, tyres, coupling, and cargo. Each item references the regulation it satisfies.

A missing or incomplete pre-trip inspection is a direct DOT violation. In a post-accident investigation, an incomplete inspection record shifts liability to the operator.

Top up if below minimum — do not overfill

Coolant level checked in overflow reservoir
Check cold — never open radiator cap on a hot engine
Brake fluid level at or above MIN mark
Low fluid may indicate a leak — inspect brake lines
Transmission fluid checked if manual or accessible on vehicle type
Power steering fluid checked
Low fluid causes heavy steering and pump wear
Windshield washer fluid full
All lights tested: headlights, high beams, tail lights, brake lights, turn signals, hazards
Walk around vehicle with a helper or use reflection in wall/door
Horn operational
Mirrors properly adjusted (both side mirrors + center mirror)
Eliminate blind spots — adjust with driver in seat
Wipers operational and blades streak-free
Replace blades if they smear or skip
Tires inflated to spec (door jamb PSI) and visually sound
Check for sidewall bubbles, cuts, or tread depth under 2/32″
FMCSA §393.75 — Defective tires prohibited on CMVs
Cargo loaded, distributed, and secured per FMCSA §393
Minimum aggregate WLL ≥ 50% of cargo weight
FMCSA §393.106(d)
Emergency equipment present (triangles, first aid, fire extinguisher)

Keep on file for 90 days
