Inspect Your Fleet Straps Before Every Load — Use This Checklist

A worn strap looks secure until it doesn’t. Fleet operations that skip strap inspection are one haul away from a DOT out-of-service order.

Work through the inspection checklist for each strap. Items cover cut damage, chemical degradation, hardware corrosion, and WLL label legibility — all DOT criteria.

FMCSA §393.106 requires straps to be free of damage, correctly labelled, and capable of meeting their rated WLL. Damaged straps are an automatic violation.

Chemical degradation may not be visible — retire any chemically contaminated strap
No heat damage (glazed, melted, or discolored sections)
Heat from cargo or exhaust degrades synthetic fibers permanently
No severe UV bleaching (chalk-white discoloration)
Bleaching indicates fiber degradation — reduced strength, retire
Webbing retains flexibility (not stiff or brittle)
Stiff webbing = UV or chemical damage
Ratchet mechanism operates smoothly without sticking
Test open/close cycle — sticky ratchets fail in field
Hook or S-hook not bent, cracked, or deformed
Bent hooks indicate previous overload — retire immediately
Latch on hook functions correctly
Safety latch prevents hook from unseating under vibration
Strap label still legible (WLL visible)
FMCSA requires knowing WLL of every tie-down in use
