“The use of solar energy has not been opened up because the oil industry does not own the Sun” as said by Ralph Nader is a quote to ponder upon. With the extinction of fuels in every visible form, we indeed would soon be tempted to move on to a sustainable ever-lasting source of energy, the Sun.
With solar panels making its way in, it has been the need of the hour to make home self-sustainable in energy.
Each hour enough sunlight hits the earth to power the world for an whole year.
Now on topic,
What are the different types of solar panel?
Solar panel is nothing but a collection of solar cells, which use the energy from the sunlight to produce electricity. The working of solar panel is caused by a strange phenomenon called photoelectric effect. The solar panels are made with different form of silicon and different amount of it, by which they are categorized.
Today’s solar industry has 4 different types of panels, such as monocrystalline silicon, polycrystalline silicon, thermal panels, Building Integrated photovoltaics (BIVP) which serve different purposes.
Monocrystalline silicon panels contain high silicon content with long range order in crystal, hence they are efficient. They are suited for roof tops, since rooftops constitute less area. They are quite expensive though.
Polycrystalline silicon panels contain lesser silicon content with long range order in crystal, lesser efficient than monocrystalline silicon panels. They are cheap, but require a very large area of coverage for panel to produce an optimum amount of power.
Building Integrated photovoltaics (BIVP) are designed to sink-in with the roof tiles, making them look like a designer art on the roofing. Decorations anyway, would not impress us since the pricing of the panel is high and panel by itself is not efficient enough compared to the efficiency of a monocrystalline silicon panel.
Thermal panels are used for meeting your water heating purpose, heating/cooling the living room by converting sunlight to thermal energy .
Now, how do I get them?
Buying new panels
New solar panels can be purchased from a solar dealer. There are quite a lot of manufacturers such as Kyocera, grape solar, renogy, suntech who have made their mark in the solar industry. You can buy these panels directly or through a retailer such as Amazon.
" Studies show that homes with solar panels tend to sell 15% faster than those without panels"
There are few companies out there, which can rent solar panels. All we have to do is to pay fixed rate for the electricity that the panel generates. The price for the energy produced won’t go up.
Buying used panels
Websites such as amazon sell used solar panels, which cost lesser than when we buy it as new.
Building up your own panels
With lot of scope on solar energy, it’s now possible to make your own small solar panel setup for under 200$. But personally I don’t recommend them since, every solar incentive requires the solar setup to be installed by a qualified solar installer to be valid.
Any possibility to reduce the expenses?
We can get upto 30% capital subsidy on solar panels and solar powered devices under governmental laws. The subsidy is dependent on the country of stay. Schemes to promote green energy such as Feed-in tariff, Renewable Heat Incentive reduce the expenses of owning panels by good amount.
