With aluminium cylindrical body the luster charger is sturdy and has a feel good texture, but the looks are not that good. The top and bottom face of the charger has a plastic feel. The price and the purpose of the battery pack does justify the downside.
On one face of the charger there is a flashlight . On the other face the charger has a power button for the flashlight, 1A/5V USB output port and a 1A/5V micro-USB port. The battery is made using grade A cell and premium microchips to ensure high quality.
The Poweradd charger has only 1 output port meaning that you can’t charge more than one device at a time unlike the best mini charger award winner, which has 2 output ports.
How to use the charger?
In order to charge your devices, you need to plug in the USB part of the micro-USB cable (in case of android) or the 10 pin lightning/30 pin connector (for apple devices, you already own) to the USB output port of the charger. The other end of the cable to the device to be charged. On connecting the device to the charger, the charger will automatically start charging, it doesn’t need any button to be pressed to start it.
For charging the battery pack you need to connect the micro-USB part of the micro-USB cable provided with the product to that of the charger and the USB end to the computer USB port. The charger does not have a dedicated LED charge indicator, but it does have a concealed LED below the power button. Those LEDs will light up red when the battery is not completely charged and blue when the charger is full.
The flashlight is controlled by the power button at the other end. On pressing the button for one time, the flashlight shines bright at “high mode”. On the second press the flashlight will be in the “low mode”. On the third press the flashlight will be in the “strobe mode” and will start flickering. One last press, you switch off the flashlight.
The light intensity difference between the high mode and low mode is very less, I feel it shines at the same intensity. The flashlight will be able to shine for 120 hours continuously on a full charge.
Battery charging time
The battery input charging time is 4-5 hours via AC adapter (not included).
Device charging time
The charger can charge any device with a battery capacity of less than 1400mAh completely. The charger will juice up an iPhone 5 (1440 mAh) from dead to full charge in around 3 hours.
NOTE: The charging will be more efficient and faster if you use the cable provided along with the charger(if you use apple products, then unfortunately you have no choice, you can’t use the provided cable).
What I liked about RAVPower luster charger
Interestingly the product comes with a round clip. what do you think the purpose of a strange shaped round clip would be? The clip can be attached to the Luster charger and can be hooked to your pocket like a pen! I like this concept by RAVPower, it’s thoughtful.
What I don’t like about RAVPower in general
On every website, which in any way mentions or sells battery pack, you can find spammers writing comments about how good RAVPower products are. If you were interested in reading about battery packs online, you would know what I mean.
That’s a very cheap way to promote a product. Companies will lose more customers than what they gain by this means to gain customers. If the RAVPower products are that good, then it should speak for itself.
- It’s small and comfortable in the first place.
- Both charger and flashlight in one single package.
- Three different lighting modes for the flashlight.
- The clip is an added benefit for portability.
- The charging efficiency is low ~60%. The chargers by Anker have around ~80% energy conversion(meaning that 80% of the given total energy capacity can be used to charge the devices, 20% is the energy lost during the storage/conversion, you can read more about it in the article top 10 ways to choose the charger of your dreams).
Even though the product seems to look promising and have a good number of positive reviews, oh boy! the charging efficiency is very low for a charger. RAVPower Luster has become more like a flashlight with battery pack ability.
“I want a charger which can get me through the day, I don’t want a flashlight”, if this is you then you need to get a different charger like the Anker mini.
“No, I need a powerful charger with a flashlight”, if this is you then you can buy the Jackery bar, it’s flashlight has an awesome 450 hour duration lifetime for a single charge.
