Anker Astro E5 battery pack does hit it big among the portable chargers for its purpose and durability. This Astro pack can be your lifeline when you forget to charge your devices or during emergency situations when you have gone camping or hiking .
But it has couple of minor bloopers which needs to be corrected to make the product better. This is a detailed review of the Anker Astro E5 external battery pack.
RATING: 4.6/ 5
In the Box
The box contains Anker Astro E5 External battery, Micro USB cable, travel pouch, instruction manual.
The Astro E5 is compatible with all Apple and Android smartphones, tablets(except Samsung, Asus tablets as quoted in the Anker website) and other 5V input USB-charged devices. It’s incompatible with iPod nano and some GPS and Bluetooth devices.
Product Dimensions: 4.9 x 3 x 0.9 inches ; 11.2 ounces.
The Astro E5 has a smooth, ebony finish and has the size of a Samsung Galaxy S3. The Astro battery pack has 2 USB ports at the top, one being 1A/5V and other 2A/5V.It has a built-in flashlight in between the USB ports.
On the front face we have the Anker logo and the 4 LED charge indicator lights. Each LED light indicates 25% of the total charge in the pack.
Just below the LED lights we have the charge button, which needs to be pressed “once” before you can charge a device using the pack. To switch on the flashlight the power button needs to be pressed “twice”. On the side is a input charging port, for charging the Astro.
The Astro E5 has a good battery size of 15000 mAh, well there do exists battery packs which have a capacity of more than 20000 mAh but this battery pack is very compact and is decently priced. Ultra-high density battery cells store the charge being input into this battery pack. Astro E5 is featured in the top 10 ways to choose the portable charger of your dreams for it’s ridiculous battery capacity.
The battery can be charged using the micro USB cable. When charging Apple devices you have to use the cable which came with the device to charge it, since no apple connector tip is included along with the product.
Battery charging time
The Astro battery can be charged within a 9-10 hours time when used with a 5V/1.5A adapter(not included with the Astro).
Device charging time
The Astro will be able to charge an iphone for 7 times completely, smartphones with large battery capacity like Samsung Galaxy S4 can be charged 4 times completely.
The iPad 3/4 is expected to be charged once with this battery pack because iPad3/4 have a battery capacity of 11560 mAh. Leaving behind the energy loss in the battery pack due to self discharge, voltage conversion and circuit resistance which totally consume 20% of total charge, it’s a fair guess that it can charge iPad completely with the remaining 12000mAh.
Both the 1A and 2A ports can be used simultaneously to charge your devices.
