The Anker Astro E3 charger is the 2nd most reviewed Anker product in Amazon among the 100s of Anker products with more than 4200 Amazon reviews, second to the Astro mini power bank.
I can hear you saying, “we have one more review adding to the heap of it”. In addition to the product review, I have tried to explain more about the Anker PowerIQ technology to make this article different from other reviews.
RATING: 4.6/ 5
In the Box
Anker E3 2nd generation 10000mAh external battery, micro USB cable, travel pouch and information manual.
All smartphones and tablets that can be charged through USB. Many Anker products have a special and unique technology called PowerIQ technology.
PowerIQ technology will enable the Anker E3 to identify the power compatibility of the connected devices and accordingly input the required amps of current without damaging the device.
TIP OF THE DAY: If you are afraid to blow up your device by connecting the device with the different rated input source and have no idea on how to go about with the voltage and current ratings of today’s devices, here is a small tip-
When a device is rated at 5V, then the input voltage needs to be strictly 5V whereas when the input current for the device is rated as 1A then the input current can be same or higher than 1A, say 2A is also allowed. You can find the detailed info here: http://electronics.stackexchange.com
In a nutshell, the input and output voltage needs to be the same, the input current has the freedom to be same or higher than the device’s current rating. Your smartphone device would use the necessary Amps of current needed to power itself from the source and leaves aside the remaining Amps of current.
We wouldn’t have a problem to make your smartphone/tablet work with any USB port since USB port will input current with voltage of 5V and all the USB powered device have a 5V rating. So the PowerIQ technology’s work would be to recognize the current rating of the device and provide same or higher current.
This slick technology was showcased in the first week of January 2014 in the Consumer Electronics Show(CES) is available starting from the 2nd generation of Anker products. Inconsequence of which Anker 2nd generation devices have a wide range of compatibility-
Apple: iPhone 5s 5c 5, iPad Air mini and other Apple smartphones.
Samsung: Galaxy S5 S4, Tab 2, Note 3 2
Other devices: PS Vita, Nexus devices, LG G3, HTC One M8, MOTO X and other android devices which works using USB charging.
Unfortunately the Anker E3 cannot charge the following gadgets,
Tablet devices: Asus tablets, HP TouchPad
Smartphone & music players: The iPod Classic, iPod nano, LG G2
Other devices: Some of the GPS and Bluetooth devices are not supported.
Product Dimensions: 5.6 x 2.8 x 0.6 inches
Weight: 8.6 ounces
The Astro E3 is light weight and sleek. It perfectly functional but on the other side, personally I am not a fan of the smartphone lookalike charger design though. It’s not as catchy as Poweradd 10,000mAh charger. When I saw the Poweradd charger I liked it very much and I knew that it will be a success.
The 10,000mAh charger has 2 USB output port on the bottom and a micro-USB input port on the side. It has LED indicator on the lower part of the front side for displaying the power status of the battery pack. Every LED indicator points to 25% close to full charge.
Always use the cable supplied with the power bank or your device’s original cable or third – party certified cables for better charging time.
Astro E3 10,000mAh is made of Lithium polymer battery which is better compared to Lithium ion when it comes to overcharge protection, charge efficiency. This charger has a battery efficiency of 92%, what?? I have never heard a battery pack which had a 92% efficiency. The highest efficiency known to me is 90% by Lepow charger. This charger should be featured in the hall of fame.
With full capacity of stored power, it can charge any iPhone four to five times or a Galaxy S3 device thrice or an iPad once. It should easily get you through 4-5 days of smartphone charging on a normal day. The in-built battery has a promised lifetime of more than 500 recharge cycles.
Battery charging duration
The Anker E3 when charged using a 1.5A/5V adapter, it can be charged as quick as within a duration of 8 hours. (the 1.5A adapter has to be purchased separately). But with a 2A charger you can bolt up the charging speed and reduce the charging time to 6 hours. Woah! battery charge going from 0 to 100% in 6 hours is a record timing.
Device charging duration
With PowerIQ technology Anker Astro E3 should charge the smartphones around 1.6 times faster and tablets like iPad-mini2 1.88 times faster than those devices without PowerIQ. It would take 2.5 hours to charge Samsung Galaxy S3, 4.24 hours to charge iPad-mini2 and 4.33 hours to charge completely iPad air(iOS 7)
Anker provides a guarantee claim for a period of 18 Months for this product.
