Is Your Car Seat Installed Correctly? Run the NHTSA Checklist

NHTSA research shows 3 in 4 child restraints are installed with at least one significant error. Walk through the official checklist and find yours.

Check each installation criterion. The checklist mirrors the NHTSA installation inspection used by certified child passenger safety technicians (CPSTs).

A loosely installed seat can move 4–6 inches in a crash, dramatically reducing protection. Correct installation is the single most impactful thing you can do after buying the seat.

Seat is in the correct recline position (rear-facing: 30–45°)
Use the built-in level indicator on the seat or a level app on your phone
FMVSS 213 — Seat must be installed at manufacturer’s specified recline angle
1-inch movement test at belt path: seat moves less than 1 inch side-to-side and front-to-back
Grab seat at belt path (not top of seat) and try to move — should be rock solid
NHTSA installation standard — <1 inch movement at belt path
Harness height is at or below child’s shoulders (rear-facing)
For forward-facing, harness should be at or above shoulders
Harness passes pinch test — no slack at child’s collar bone
Pinch the harness strap at collar bone level — fingers should not be able to grab any slack
Chest clip is at armpit level
NOT on the belly and NOT at the neck — at the armpit
Car seat is not resting against the front seat back (rear-facing)
Rear-facing seats can touch but not be compressed by the front seat
LATCH or belt installation completed correctly (not both simultaneously)
MOST manufacturers say not to use both LATCH AND belt at the same time — check your manual
Top tether attached and tight (forward-facing seats)
Top tether reduces head excursion by 4–6 inches in a crash — always use it for forward-facing
Car seat base is level (convertible seats)
Level indicator built into the base — green = correct
Seat is registered with manufacturer for recall notification
Register online at manufacturer website — takes 2 minutes, critical for safety recall alerts
